ONET’s BRADTEC to underpin UK’s key nuclear decommissioning business

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 05, 2011 - ONET TECHNOLOGIES has taken over BRADTEC DECON TECHNOLOGIES LTD, which is an established player in the British civil nuclear industry. BRADTEC initially developed the Magnox Dissolution Process in the 1980s and its technology now presents a number of possible applications throughout the nuclear sector at facilities such as Sellafield (in North-Western England).

The Magnox Dissolution Process was originally pioneered by BRADTEC's founders, George Elder and David Bradbury, in the 1980s. Magnox is the magnesium-based fuel cladding used in reactors of that name in the UK. In the Magnox Dissolution Process, the cladding is dissolved in carbonated water. The process is highly selective and safe, and allows waste Magnox cladding to be dissolved in a controlled manner without dissolving other radioactive materials present.

The technology has progressed to full-scale application at the Dungeness A power station, in South-Eastern England, where it has been instrumental in dealing wi aston martin th the Magnox splitter and lug waste at that plant.

The Magnox Dissolution Process technology has significant application potential at Sellafield, which is home to a wide range of nuclear facilities, as much of the material in its legacy ponds and silos area is based on Magnox and its corrosion products. The process presents a number of possible applications to assist with the decommissioning of these facilities.

Following an initial study as part of the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's Direct Research Portfolio, further work has now been placed with BRADTEC and therefore ONET TECHNOLOGIES, which took over BRADTEC in July 2011, in order to examine the potential options. This will be followed by more detailed examination of the most promising applications identified. Over 20% of the entire budget of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is planned to be spent on the decommissioning of the legacy ponds and silos facilities.

The purpose of chemical decontamination is to remove radioactivity from metal components to aid decommissioning and waste management. BRADTEC has developed the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Decontamination for Decommissioning (DFD) and EPRI DFDX Chemical Decontamination Processes with funding from the EPRI, which owns the intellectual property and is based in California (in the USA). BRADTEC also has a worldwide application licence from EPRI.

Initial development of the chemical decontamination technologies took place in the mid-1990s. These technologies have since been used to clean components and systems in metal-management factories and on nuclear sites. Interest is intensifying in the UK, where these technologies are valued, as they can support decommissioning and metal-recycling operations. The processes have been used recently to clean heat exchanger plates at the Wylfa power station (on Anglesey, in North Wales) and are applicable to steel systems as well as to a number of other metals. EPRI DFDX can be applied on site to whole systems prior to dismantling, or to components in a factory situation.

"China Autos Report Q4 2011" is now available at Fast Market Research

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 04, 2011 - China's total sales actually fell y-o-y for the second consecutive month in May, prompting a revision of BMI's total vehicle sales growth forecast for the full year to 5.2%. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), vehicle sales were down 3.98% in May, to 1.38mn units, following a 0.25% drop in April. There was a rally in June as the passenger car segment returned to positive y-o-y growth. This took total vehicle sales for H111 to 9.3mn units, up 3.4% y-o-y, which justified our downward revision.

Our production outlook has also been revised downwards to meet the slower demand, while supply chain issues relating to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami are also playing a part, despite efforts by other suppliers to fill the gap. In May, output of passenger cars fell 10% compared with April, to 1.041mn units, while commercial vehicle output was also down 18.68% month-on-month to 308,000 units. This leaves production for the five-months to May up by 3.19% y-o-y at 7.779mn units, which is lower than sales in both growth and volume terms. BMI's new production forecast projects growth of just 4%, with total output set to reach 17.774mn units.

German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) is sticking to its strategy of producing 3mn units per year in China, despite BMI's expectations of slowing sales growth over the next five years compared with previous years. This strategy has most recently seen the company win Government approval to build two new plants in China, which will take VW's total production presence in the country to 11 facilities. The new plants will be complemented by the expansion of two existing factories in Nanjing and Chengdu, which will have their annual output increased to between 300,000 and 350,000 units. All of the additional capacity falls under VW's plan to invest EUR10.6bn (US$1.64mn) in China between 2011 and 2015.

German carmaker BMW has also doubled its initial investmen rc helicopter and car market place cadillac t for China as the sales growth of several premium brands in April exceeded their volume brand counterparts. This is in line with BMI's forecast for the premium segment to outperform the overall vehicle market. BMW will now invest EUR1bn (US$1.4bn) in expanding its new plant in Tiexi, Shenyang province. The plant will now have an installed capacity of 200,000 units, which when coupled with an expansion of its Da Dong plant, will result in an annual production capacity of 300,000 units in China. BMI believes that China will be one of the most crucial markets in the global premium segment leadership race, as it was one of the most closely contested in 2010 and offers better growth opportunities than the more developed states of Germany and the US.

Montana hosts international thermophiles conference Sept. 11-16

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 29, 2011 - Approximately 250 scientists from all over the wor auto part ld will gather at Big Sky Sept. 11 through 16 to discuss their discoveries and progress in research about organisms that live in hot springs and other extreme environments.

Hosted by Montana State University, the 11th annual Thermophiles Conference will focus on three main areas: viruses; genomics and metagenomics; and evolution, ecology and biogeochemical processes.

Among the keynote speakers will be John Peters, director of MSU's Thermal Biology Institute. He will discuss geology and microbiology in Yellowstone National Park.  Christie Hendrix, research permit facilitator at the Yellowstone Center for Resources, will discuss research in Yellowstone.

According to organizers, the conference is being held at Big Sky for two reasons – the reputation of TBI researchers and the proximity of Yellowstone National Park.  Yellowstone is the birth place of thermophile research and a special draw for many scientists, especially international researchers, said Heather Rauser, Peters' assistant.

"Yellowstone is a beautiful and unique natural environment from which so much exciting science emerged," Rauser adde acura d. "This research impacts many areas in applied science, including medicine, bioenergy, industrial biofeuling and energy efficiency, novel biomaterials, bioremediation, and extremophilic systems biology."

This will be the first time the annual thermophile conference has been held in Montana and the second time in the United States. The researchers first gathered in Italy in 1990. The conference then moved to Iceland, New Zealand, the United States (Athens, Ga., in 1996), France, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway and China.

GFS announces completion of retro-commissioning services at three Johns Hopkins Medicine facilities
